There’s only so much the naked eye can see and when you look down your drains the only thing in plain sight is a dark abyss. When issues arise with your home’s sewer and drain system, a plumber’s sidekick to diagnose issues is a drain camera.
A drain camera and sewer camera is essentially the second pair of eyes that support a plumber’s investigation into what is going on with your home’s piping. It consists of a long hose with a camera at the tip that is connected to a video monitor. As the hose is pushed down your drain, the plumber now has the ability to travel through the inside of your home’s pipes, looking at their monitor to pinpoint any problem areas that appear.
Count on Crow’s Plumbing Service for all the repairs, maintenance, or installations you may need.
What Can a Drain Camera Inspection Find?
Scheduling a drain camera inspection can either provide peace of mind that your pipes are working as they should or uncover underlying issues that are disrupting the functionality of your plumbing system. A few examples of issues that can be uncovered with a drain camera inspection include:
- Damaged Pipes. A drain camera can capture any cracked or broken pipes that are causing more harm than good with your water flow.
- Tree Roots. Since a portion of your pipes live underground, tree roots can creep through not only breaking your pipe, but also causing blockages.
- Blockages. General debris or foreign objects that are trapped within your pipes can be discovered through a drain camera inspection. When found, hydro jetting may remedy this issue.
- Pipe Belly or Sag. While your drains are built with durability, they are still susceptible to physical changes which include bellies and sags. When your pipes have these kinds of dips, it disrupts water flow as every belly or dip begins to accumulate standing water and debris. A drain camera inspection will catch this and the plumber will have recommendations on how to address it.
When to Schedule a Drain Camera Inspection
A drain camera inspection is a great way to find the source of a plumbing issue that is not easily identifiable. It requires minimal setup and is a nondestructive method for viewing pipes underneath the home. There are a myriad of reasons for scheduling a drain camera inspection, but some common instances instances include:
- Insect Invasion. From standing water caused by bellies to broken pipes exposed to the elements. The moisture, smell, and accessibility caused by drain issues welcomes various types of insects which can travel into your home. When you start to notice these unwelcomed guests, you may need a drain camera to take a deeper look.
- Water Back Flow or Slow Drainage. If you’re noticing water seeping back up into your shower, sinks, and/or toilets or nothing drains down as quickly as it should, then the best way to diagnose the issue is scheduling a drain camera inspection to find the root cause (pun intended).
- Unusual Smells. If your drains are exuding a funky odor, this could be a symptom of an underlying problem that can be found using a drain camera.

FAQs
What do I do if I have a busted pipe?
If you have a broken pipe that’s flowing with water, try to turn off the water valve at the source. If you can’t reach it, turn off the main water valve for the house. Then, call us to discuss repairs.
Why can’t I just use drain cleaners to get rid of a clog?
Drain cleaners may clear out small clogs but they can’t get through larger clogs down the line. They also cause damage to the pipe lining, which could lead to leaks later.
What do I do with a broken garbage disposal?
Be very careful with a damaged or broken garbage disposal. If you have two sinks, use the other sink for now and call Crow’s Plumbing Service to schedule garbage disposal services.
